We've got some exciting news at HSCB!  This September, we will be participating in the 2014 Single-Site Parade of Homes!  The location is King's Ridge in Green, Ohio.  Last year, we entered a custom home in the Multi-Site, and were very pleased with the foot traffic (you can read about last year's entry here and here).  As business continues to grow, we are especially anxious to see what this year will bring!

This year's model, "The Verne", is well underway!  It is being built in loving memory of my grandfather, Verne Scott.  This 2,684 square foot home will showcase custom finishes and our team's quality craftsmanship throughout.  Since tours will not be available until it's completion later this Summer, be sure to stop back and check out our future blog posts to see how things are progressing!

There are a total of five entries at this year's Single-Site location, and will be several others participating in the Multi-Site.  The 2014 Parade will take place Friday through Sunday, September 12-14th, Tuesday, September 16th, and Friday through Sunday, September 19-21st.

Stay tuned for future won't want to miss it!

Rebuilding Together - April 26th

Rebuilding Together is a non-profit program that is geared toward helping low-income, elderly, disabled, and veteran homeowners repair and rehabilitate their homes. This year, Rebuilding Together will serve 9 homeowners in Akron, Wadsworth, and Green.

Rebuilding day is 4/26, and the Home Builder's Association serving Portage and Summit Counties still needs your help! You can join us by volunteering to provide minor home repairs such as painting, landscaping, and decluttering, or make a donation to our team.  Just follow the link for more information!

April Showers

The old rhyme, “April Showers Bring May Flowers”, certainly isn’t uncommon this time of year.  For us, however, the saying doesn’t only ring true for fresh blooms.  In fact, we most often associate it with new foundations, framework, and drywall (much less appealing, right?).  For many builders, Spring never fails to be a busy time of year – albeit a very messy time of year.  After all, not only do April showers bring May flowers, but they also bring a lot of mud to our jobsites!  That's why we'd like to invite you to visit any of our homes under construction for a "Muddy Boots Tour"!

New Floor Plan!

Many of our clients prefer to start a blueprint from scratch, customizing every detail of their future home as they go.  However, to some, the mere thought is just too overwhelming.  We frequently get inquiries from customers asking if we offer specific floor plans.  While we do not duplicate homes that our previous clients have designed and built, we can offer many examples of floor plans that can be customized to fit your individual needs.  We also have some new floor plans that have been designed specifically for us to accommodate a wide range of tastes, preferences and needs - including this one!

This "to be built" home is a 1.5 story located in the Grove of Weatherstone in Wadsworth, Ohio - just minutes from the expressway, shopping, and more!  It features 2,134 square feet of an open floor plan with a 1st floor master bedroom.  For more details, visit  This home can also be built on your lot.

To view other floor plans, feel free to give us a call!

Cabin Fever?

Do the cold temperatures and snow have you stuck indoors? If so, then you may want to venture out next weekend for a taste of Spring at Akron's annual Home & Flower Show held by the HBA.  Details below!

Comparing Apples to Apples

If you've made the decision to build a custom home, and you've already completed a blueprint with the help of an architect, designer, or general contractor, your next steps are probably to price out your set of plans and select a builder. While there are various things to consider when selecting a builder, some individuals end up basing their final decision on price. This can mean securing bids from multiple contractors. While various quotes play an important role in deciding on a builder (after all, budget is a key piece to the puzzle), there are also some things that should be investigated. Here are some things to keep in mind if you are reviewing multiple bids from different contractors.

Check out this year's best new homes!

The HBA and MSC recently held its 2013 MAME & Envision Awards in Fairlawn, Ohio.  The event recognizes achievements in new home construction, commercial, and remodeling projects, in addition to marketing and sales excellence within the new home industry.

The recipients of the Envision Awards are chosen by a panel of judges who score entries located throughout Portage, Summit, and surrounding counties.  The judges come from a variety of backgrounds, scoring each entry on a written form and also performing a personal inspection of the properties.

Year in Review - 2013

As we inch closer to another new year, we have often found ourselves reflecting back on 2013.  The past year has left little doubt in our minds that the housing market is continuing to show consistent improvement.  Our team, personally, can attest to a steady increase in new home sales.  Furthermore, we are pleased to hear from our sub-contractors, suppliers, and other colleagues that they are experiencing constant improvement in their businesses, as well.  We rarely tire of hearing this

First-Time President; Two-Time "Builder of the Year"

Congratulations are in order again for Helen Scott Custom Builders!  The local HBA held its 70th annual inauguration banquet on December 7, 2013.  Scott Strayer, President of Helen Scott Custom Builders, was installed as the association's 2014 President.  Earlier in the evening, Strayer, along with partner, Dean Scarborough, and VP of Operations, Matt Meyer, proudly accepted the coveted 2013 "Builder of the Year" award.  The team also won this award in 2012.  A proud moment, indeed, as this was t
